- Introduction to Assessments 


Assessment & learning have always been a mainstream influence in the area of schools, colleges, institutes & individual learning. The roots of assessment as a distinct collection of methods & theories for gathering the evidence extend for education. The tradition of assessments examines collegiate learning as a particular application of educational & developmental psychology.


 



The methodological rise of assessments was first started in the 1930s & 40s by Learned & wood (1938), and much of it concentrated on single colleges inviting 7- to 21-year-old students in traditional environments. The maturation development was thus as much an area of interest as cognitive. By the end of the 60s, there was a large implementation in the area of assessment & learning. Feldman and Newcomb synthesize the findings & mechanism of assessment for learning. In 1977, Bowen’s ‘Investment in Learning’ helped establish a public view for assessment by describing the societal returns on investment associated with higher education.


Pace’s book ‘Measuring the outcomes of colleges’(1979) emphasized the role of student behaviors and college environment, providing the conceptual roots of the NSSE(National Survey of Student Engagement). The phenomenon of student attrition constructed an ideal proving for new methodologies involving better study designs, specially organized surveys, and analytical techniques that were later developed by many assessment practitioners.
