Theory Of Assessment & Learning

Assessment for learning is an approach that is integrated by teachers & their students, creating feedback, solutions, and diagnosis. Nowadays, technology can build in many opportunities to assess how students are learning & then can use this information to add beneficial changes in education. Assessment within schools, institutes is an integral part of the process of student's learning & progression. It varies greatly within education & effective assessment for learning comes in many forms including self-assessment, formative assessment(know more about formative assessment), and teacher-led assessment. This Blog addresses various methods & psychology for learning assessments.

Assessment for learning is the process of seeking and interpreting evidence for use by learners and their teachers to decide where the learners are in their learning, where they need to go and how best to get there”.
(Assessment Reform Group, 2002)

Function of Assessments

Assessment begins with thorough planning for interesting lessons, clear learning, concentration, or objectives to direct the student in their learning & activities. The assessment itself can take many forms. from a minor discussion with students & teachers, there are a variety of learning techniques that can take place in schools, colleges, or institutes. policies, Assessment requires many tools & indicators, these tools are used in school according to their methods, diversity & lifestyle.

The initial exploration of the assessment for the learning cycle gives an insight into the process teachers & students carry out. It is far from a tick or a stamp at the end of a task but a never-stopping cycle taking into account past progress & using assessment tools to enhance the student's learning.
(Hattie & Timperley, 2007)

From CCEA(2007) : Assessment For Learning guidance KS 1-2 by Northern IReland Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment.

“Assessment will only be effective when “learning” is out in an integral part of the process.” (Berry & Adamson, 2012)

Formative & Summative Assessment

EaseToLearn Formative & Summative Assessment details.

There is considerable diversity in how formative and summative assessment is practiced. For Instance, feedback can be offered to students as very informal & unstructured comments, or more formal written comments on a structured piece of work or classroom.

Formative Assessment -

The main purpose of formative assessment is to analyze student learning and provide ongoing feedback to their students. It is an assessment for learning. If it is designed appropriately, it can help students identify their weaknesses & strengths. It enables students to improve their self-skills so that they can manage their education in a less complicated fashion.

Summative Assessment -

The summative assessment aims to evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit like session, year, or semester. It compares a student against some standard or benchmark. Summative assessments have high stakes and are treated by the students as the priority over formative assessment. However, without formative assessment, it is unable to achieve success in summative assessment, and summative assessments also can be used formatively by students and faculty to guide their activities in particular courses or subjects.

To engage students in formative assessment:

  • Explain the reason behind formative assessment c– make it clear to students that through engaging with formative tasks they get to gain experience with their assessments, risk-free, and can develop far stronger skills to obtain better grades in the summative assessments.
  • Establish a link between summative & formative assessment – design formative assessments in such a way that they contribute to the summative task. This lowers the workload on the students and provides them with the necessary feedback to improve their final performance. An example of such assessment is producing an essay plan, a structure of a literature review, part of the essay, or bibliography
  • Decrease the number of summative assessments and increase the number of formative assessments.

Conclusion -

A good assessment requires relevant criteria (goals), evidence, and a reliable method of judging the extent to which criteria have been met. If students are learning through inquiry, then the evidence of their learning exists in what they do in inquiry-based activities.
